After three absolute mockaries of one of my favorite, mainstream comicbook heros, Spider-Man is back in the July release of “The Amazing Spider-Man”. Pulling from a different generation of the most popular version of the comic, Peter Parker’s backstory and love interest, Gwen Stacy, look to have a different spin, adding a new focus and dynamic to the importance of who he is before becoming Spider-Man. I always thought seeing the Lizard as a villain would be a cool attempt, seeing as how far along movie makeup and CGI has come. It also makes a lot of sense to the story because Dr. Conners is very much a part of Peter’s life before he becomes Spider-Man, as well. I’m looking forward to checking out the flick when it hits theaters. Hopefully since the entire comicbook world finally sees how to get it right visa vie the Dark Knight films, this will be the rough and gritty Spider-Man flick that the story deserves and the directors and producers will leave the fluff at home. Check out the trailer…
This movie’s trio of predicessors were destroyed by character bastardization, horrible casting and for the most part, poor villain choices. Toby Macguire and his horrible acting made Peter Parker look more like a giant wuss with massive homosexual tendancies. In the comics, Mary Jane Watson looks like the porn star every geek wished really existed. Kirsten Dunst is anything but that, and hardly attractive at all in my opinion. James Franco is just a pathetic actor, so right there your three main characters that play massive roles in each film, completely miss the mark. Even though I love Willem Dafoe, the Green Goblin was phoned in. The Sandman was just a poor, POOR villain choice. Venom is the most awesome night and day villain Marvel created to battle a protagonist and they completely destroyed the character. Eddie Brock is a giant in the comic book. How in the world do you give that role to Topher Grace??? Venom is a massive black monster with muscles rippling on for days and they made him look like a little pipsqueak who had been hitting the gym a bit. The only good villain they seemed to be able to recreate was Doctor Octopus. Great depiction, solid recreation, and on top of it, Alfred Molina looked JUST like him. The way I see it… this new Spider-Man flick, has nowhere to go but up and plenty of breathing room to do so.
