Any Star Wars fan that has had a very attentive finger on the pulse of the developments for the new movie coming out in December, knows that fan art is a gigantic part of the Star Wars culture. Despite their intentions, fans mock up everything from fake movie posters to fake movie trailers. Star Wars being Star Wars, fans bite off more than they can chew with the fake trailers, but they get the clicks/view stats which is all that really matters to them. The fake posters and other similar fan art images are another story entirely. The creativity and stylization injected into Star Wars fan art is incredible, and even though none of it is franchise official, some of it definitely could be and probably should be.
The thing about fan art, especially the Star Wars art that’s meant to make you believe it’s official, it is mostly created with a high level of realism utilized. In the poster auction being held with the Budapest Poster Gallery… not so much. Check out the poster renditions being auctioned off for the original Star Wars trilogy.
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
The twist here is this… these are some of the original Star Wars movie posters painted by Hungarian artist, Tibor Helényi. I don’t expect even the super hardcore Star Wars fans to know that, but they may have seen these images before. In his passing last year, the art in his estate is up for sale. Through the Budapest Poster Gallery, the original oil paintings of these posters (and a ton more) will be auctioned off on May 31, 2015 at 11:00 AM PST.
Up for sale and a little less off the wall design-wise is the sketch and painting of the Star Wars board game cover.
Hit up the comments and let me know what side of the line you’re on with these posters. There is almost no gray area whatsoever with Star Wars fans regarding these poster designs. They either love ’em or hate ’em. What say you?
I’m certainly never going to be able to outbid everyone on the planet for these posters but I’m certainly going to throw my hat in the ring for a few of them. Just in case I happen to land one or some, definitely keep up with those developments by following me on facebook, twitter and instagram.
